'Light skin girls are better'
'Dark skin girls are better'
It's 2017 and some girls are more than conscious of their skin tone, they are uncomfortable. Now they aren't uncomfortable because they are what they are, society has made them uncomfortable to be who they are.
It's 2017 and some girls feel more privileged to be lighter skinned or darker skinned. It has become a competition to embrace what we were born with.
A generation of which qualities, skills and things that actually matter can be dismissed as a result of being lighter or darker skinned. Where girls wish to be one another solely based on complexion not self-love.
Too often have I heard, 'well your light skinned, so you can'
'you're too dark to do that'
'you're a bit pale to be honest'
'I don't like...because'... the list could go on...
No, I am not solely referring to a specific race here. I am referring to every race, and every shade/complexion a person can have.
The stigmas and stereotypes attached to those of a certain skin tone can be discouraging, and also build problems/consciousness where there hasn't been before.
For whoever out there that is struggling with societal pressure. You do not need to. As a female of whichever skin tone, you are beautiful and unique. You do not need to buy creams or tan excessively to be like a person that simply is not you, but do whatever makes you happy with yourself.
See it as this, if society woke up one day and praised who you were, light skinned or dark skinned...would you drop all the weight on your shoulders? The insecurities? The bleaching? The make up shade that is far from your own? The type of boys you go for or want to please? The stress...? The love? The happiness you give to yourself?
I don't know if you would, but I know that you shouldn't have to wait for others approval, you should be into yourself and love every difficult/joyful moment you encounter because setting by example will allow you and so many more girls to NOT be defined by their shade.
Love yours x
